All the wars, all the unhappinesses for millions of reasons, all the worries about elections, all the fears about what havoc our changes to the climate might wreak on us this year…
all of that and more is about to be eclipsed here in the Ohio River Valley and across a huge swath of North America by something much greater.
Of course, solar eclipses happen a lot on Earth. But rarely do they come to one’s own neighborhood, I guess.
And they invite a deep reflection, don’t they?
How often we forget that we take part in something much larger than we realize — a few human beings on a small pitch of grass on a planet spinning around the Sun in an ever expanding Universe.
It’s enough to make wars stop for a moment. It’s enough to let go of sour thoughts about so-and-so. It’s enough to forgive oneself for whatever silliness that was a big deal yesterday but now in the grander life of things is next to nothing.
I suppose every moment can be that — an invitation to change course, to realize that what I’m doing or thinking doesn’t have to be that way. Often my writings about YAHWEH and the wind are just that…I suspect the ancient prophets/ecstatics of the Bible were onto that kind of realization with their bordercrossing ways of life.
How flexible is your thinking?
Well, we have two more opportunities this week to invite new perspectives…
